Hazardous canisters washing up on local beaches

A warning to beachgoers with hazardous silver canisters washing up along the east coast.

If exposed to moisture, these canisters release phosphine – a toxic, flammable, and colourless gas which can be incredibly dangerous and potentially fatal for anyone who is exposed to it.

The canisters have recently been found in Cape York, Gladstone, and Facing Island.

Anyone who comes across one is urged not to touch it and call 000 to report it.

Since 2012, these canisters (believed to be fumigants from ships) have been washing up on beaches across Australia’s east coast.
