On Sunday, 8th September, Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club will be on the beach to host Wide Bay
Capricorn Surf Life Saving’s inaugural regional open day. This event aims to showcase the incredible
opportunities available at our local surf lifesaving clubs for potential patrolling members and
interested residents from 10 am till 1.00pm.
Miles Sierp, President of Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club, emphasized the importance of these
clubs in our communities: “Our local Surf Life Saving Clubs play a vital role, providing essential
services and imparting lifelong skills. Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club members are committed to
being there for our community and beach users.”
Kim O’Neill, Club Captain of Tannum Sands Surf Life Saving Club, echoed this sentiment: “We are
looking for community members to get involved with us. We believe there’s something for everyone,
and you don’t even have to get wet! Our Observer’s Award is a fantastic way to support our clubs on
the beaches. Surf Life Saving offers a wide range of activities, from active patrolling to surf sports, in
a fun, friendly, healthy atmosphere.”
Tannum Sands member Minnie Smith offered her support. From her experiences, Surf Life Saving
offers a wide range of activities, from active patrolling to surf sports, truly something for everybody.
Darren Everard, Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Regional Operations Manager, highlighted the
longstanding tradition of local clubs: “Our local clubs have a long and proud history on our beaches
and do a magnificent job. We are now working collectively to continue this tradition. With new
awards such as our Observer’s Award, people can join our team without entering the water. As their
confidence and skills develop, they can progress through the award and qualification process.”
“We hope our open day will allow attendees to experience what surf lifesaving has to offer both on
and off the beach. Over all, where would you rather be? For me, it’s at the beach,” Mr. Everard said.
