Locals are being urged to respect the environment and respect the rules on local beaches, such as Cocoanut and Zilzie Beach.
It’s illegal to drive on all Livingstone Shire beaches except for Farnborough Beach, but there’s been increasing incidents of people ignoring the law.
Livingstone mayor Andy Ireland says it’s the 5 percent who are ruining it for the 95 percent who are doing the right thing.
“So we’ve got this 5 percent element, within the community which is just essentially driving on dunes, destroying turtle nests, destroying birds nests.
“We are calling on people to respect the local laws and stay off the beaches, where the signs say you can’t drive.”
To raise awareness and deter unauthorized driving, the Council has installed informative signage at strategic locations along Cocoanut Beach and Zilzie Beach.
These signs will clearly outline the penalties for engaging in illegal four-wheel driving activities on these beaches.
Fines of $774 apply to all drivers on Cocoanut Beach and Zilzie Beach.
